The operation for your Lakers was first began in Detroit before it was moved to Minneapolis. That's when the group received the name that they're known for and which the state is nicknamed - Land of the 10,000 Lakes. Different league championships were won 5 by the infamous team before the were than moved to Los Angeles.

The Lakers staff was first made back 1944 when Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen decided they were planning to choose the Detroit Gems (a part of the National Basketball League) to get a total of $15. The Lakers were able to be the first to choose the people they needed from the 1947 dispersal draft from the Professional Basketball League of America - since the Gems had the worst record of all the teams in the NBL. From this draft they chose George Mikan who later in life became one of the basketballs best heart. With the help of coach John Kundla the Lakers group could the NBL title throughout the 47-48 season. It was during this period that they were chosen along with three other groups to participate in the Basketball Association of America. From this they won the 48-49 BAA tournament.

George Mikan wasnt the only player that will help bring greatness for the Lakers. Slater Martin, Vern Mikkelsen, Jim Pollard, and Clyde Lovellette all played big roles and along with George Mikan they all reached the NBA Hall of Fame during the decades of 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, and 1954. Their game just improved If the staff moved to Los Angeles in 1960. It had been than that Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, and Gail Goodrich all made their way to the Hall of Fame also.

Despite this achievement the Lakers they always seemed to be thwarted by one team - the Boston Celtics. They went against this team six times and everytime they lost the championship. Fans were sure when Bill Sharman had taken charge of the team that the Lakers could eventually secure their win against the Celtics in 1972. However, the Lakers were still not able to win a tournament. Until Earvin Magic Johnson joined the team that is. In 1979 Johnson (who at the time was merely a rookie) had to take control for the wounded Abdul-Jabbar and made an amazing 42 points, 7 helps, and 1-5 rebounds to secure the championship.

Under Coach Pat Riley the Lakers were able to visit the tournament finals ten times throughout the 1980's. They won 5 of the championships out of 8.

They spent most of the 1990s playing against teams that most didn't consider to be reliable title contenders though they could actually make it once more for the championship finals in 1991. Things started to lookup for them in 1996 when they signed on the novice from the Charlotte Hornets - Kobe Bryant and Shaquille ONeal..
